Barca ready to take Arda case to CAS

Barcelona have given up attempting to win FIFA to their position on Arda Turan’s registration and the issue will soon go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS].

AS reports Barca have thrice made efforts to clarify the position of Turan, signed over the summer from Atletico Madrid but not registered due to the Catalans’ transfer embargo.

Barca argue there are three grey areas that need to be clarified and will lodge their case with FIFA’s Appeals Committee this week, and that is a step taken before the issue moves to CAS.

A rule on the books of the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] that allows for players to be registered outside a transfer window as replacements for long-term injuries is at the heart of the stand-off.

Barca believe their transfer embargo ended when the summer window closed in late August and as a result, they should be allowed to register Turan to replace Rafinha, who will miss much of the season.

They are two of the three points that Barca want clearing up – exactly when the embargo is to be lifted and if the RFEF rule applies to them – while the third relates to some of the underage players that had been on Barca’s books but were banned from playing or training with the club because of the embargo.

The embargo was instituted as punishment for the signing of players aged under 18 from outside Spain but the players themselves has been barred from playing or training at La Masia.

Barca have attempted to have the governing body explain their position but without response, leading the club to explore their legal options.
