Talking Points: Five Things to Look Out For in European Football This Weekend
Here is our weekly look at the action we can expect to enjoy across Europe this weekend, and some betting tips that hopefully will help readers make a bit of extra cash!
#1 – Bayern Can All But Seal the Title
The league leaders have a date with a Hamburger this weekend; that’s tenth placed Hamburg SV to me and you. Bayern will be fancied – their hosts are winless in three – and will then have the advantage of being able to sit back, relax and watch as their nearest rivals, Borussia Dortmund, face a tough trip to Monchengladbach.
The hosts in that one have lost just once in six outings, and of course inflicted Bayern’s first defeat of the season just prior to Christmas. Dortmund will know that anything less than a win will all but hand the Bundesliga title to the reigning champions. A defeat in their last outing at Koln gave Bayern an eight point lead – and that could well be extended this weekend.
#2 – Barca Back On Top?
It was a surprise by all accounts that Atletico Madrid were top of the La Liga table heading into 2016, and while that’s largely down to the fact that they have played one more game than Barcelona due the Catalan giants’ sojourn in the Club World Cup.
Diego Simeone’s side face a tough trip to Celta Vigo this weekend though; this is a side that occupies fifth place in the division after a fine run. They’re the third highest scoring team in the league, and pose a huge threat to Atletico’s status here.
Barcelona, meanwhile, host Granada, a side that boasts the second worst defensive record in the division – and we know how deadly Messi, Suarez, Neymar and co are going forward. Three points here could take them back to the summit of La Liga.
#3 – Paris Pounding?
Just how many goals will PSG put past Bastia this weekend? That’s the question on many peoples’ lips as the undefeated Ligue 1 leaders entertain the 16th placed side.
PSG have scored in 95% of their league ties so far this term – so they will be expected to score one at least – but the feeling is that the Bastia keeper may well be picking the ball out of the net more times than that.
Fired by Edison Cavani and the one, the only Zlatan Ibrahimovic, PSG have notched eleven in their last three games. Bastia, meanwhile, have conceded goals in two-thirds of their league matches.
As far as today’s betting tips are concerned, PSG with a -2 handicap at 1.95 looks the easiest way to double your money this weekend.
#4 – Does Juve’s Win Streak End Here?
The run that Juventus have enjoyed in recent weeks is nothing short of remarkable given their struggles at the start of the campaign. They have won eight Serie A matches in a row, and it is a run that has gotten back into the title race big time. Indeed, many punters are adding the black and whites to their betting tips, and the bookmakers still make them favourites for the championship.
This week they travel to take on a Sampdoria side whose mid-table league position doesn’t really reflect their progress this term. Perhaps most crucially, they have only lost twice at home all season. So they will be confident going into this fixture, and the Double Chance market at 2.70 looks like one of those football betting tips worth backing.
#5 – Clash of the Titans in Eredivisie
Many pundits have Ajax down as the Eredivisie winners in their betting tips, and it’s not hard to see why. The Amsterdam side are top by three clear points and have only lost twice all season.
But the two teams just behind them in the pecking order – PSV and Feyenoord – will not give up the race without a fight, and they meet each other on Sunday in a huge match.
Feyenoord have home advantage and so perhaps start as favourites – particularly as they have taken 21 points from a possible 24 at home. But PSV’s away form isn’t too shabby either, and so this is one of the games that is hard to find football betting tips for. But the draw, at 3.50, looks likely.
